We have many patients who want a step-by-step guide on how to set up a good oral hygiene routine and what types of things should be included in this routine. Please consider this page as your oral hygiene guide!
GOOD ORAL HYGIENE ROUTINE
Below are the 4 things that should always be a part of your daily dental hygiene routine:
BRUSHING YOUR TEETH
We all know that we should be brushing our teeth every day. But there’s a technique that can help you brush your teeth correctly.
Make sure you’re brushing for two minutes each time you brush
Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle, pointed towards the gums
Make sure you’ve brushed each surface of the teeth including both sides and the chewing surface
Brush your teeth at least twice a day, or after each meal
Use fluoride toothpaste when brushing
FLOSSING YOUR TEETH
Flossing should be as important to your routine as brushing is. If you don’t floss, you’re allowing plaque to build up in between the teeth, where your brush can’t reach. We see many cavities forming between the teeth because people are forgetting to floss. Below are some tips on how to floss correctly.
Floss your teeth at least once a day (or more)
It’s important that you’re remembering to floss your back molars as well, even though they’re tougher to reach
Follow the curve of each tooth to avoid causing damage to the gum tissue
CLEANING YOUR TONGUE
Many people don’t know that cleaning your tongue should be as important a step as brushing and flossing. The same kinds of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth, are building up on your tongue as well. Below are some ways to make sure you’re keeping your tongue healthy and clean:
If you’re using a toothbrush to clean your tongue, put some toothpaste on the brush and use circular motions to brush the tongue
If you’re using floss to clean your tongue, wrap the ends of the floss around each forefinger and use the middle area of floss to scrape down the tongue
If you’re using a tongue scraper, hold the scraper with both hands and use the middle to gently scrape down the tongue
Please remember to rinse your mouth after you clean your tongue. This will wash away any remaining bacteria.
